A full-time artist based in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, Russell spent several decades in marketing, communication and administration leadership roles with a number of organizations including OK Radio Group, Keyano College, Arts Council Wood Buffalo and The United Way of Fort McMurray. He has served on a number of boards over the years, both locally and provincially, and was the long-time president of a local visual and performing arts festival called interPLAY. Russell ran for public office in 2010 and was elected as a regional councillor in Wood Buffalo. He served a single term before losing an election in 2013. He enjoys noting that he is “a recovered politician”. His artistic awakening happened in 2013 at the age of 47. As part of his creative pursuits, he began to discover that his developing skills and growing audience gave him a great platform for philanthropy. He has performed live paintings at numerous major events throughout Alberta, which along with high profile donated paintings, have helped raise almost $300,000 for a variety of charities and causes. Russell has recently joined the board of a charity called Bracelets 4 Buildings after having been inspired by their humanitarian work in Cambodia. He has been the host of IMPACT on 91.1 The Bridge since April 2016.
